Aire Libre is a dance-based video installation that examines toxic air and soil pollution in Los Angeles County and its disproportionate effect on lower-income communities of color living amid the heavy industry, infrastructure, and polluting facilities that underpin our capitalist, fossil-fuel-based economy.
Aire Libre is a collaborative project led by artist Erin Cooney, bringing together East Yard Communities for Environmental Justice, CONTRA-TIEMPO Activist Dance Company, poet Rocío Carlos, and vocalists Carmina Escobar and Joung-A Monica Yum.
CONTRA-TIEMPO's dance performances in Aire Libre materialize the interconnectedness of our bodies with the air we breathe and the ground we tread. The vocal performances by Escobar and Yum convey the profound emotions of communities long affected by environmental harm overlooked by corporations and government officials. Poet Rocío Carlos has crafted the exhibition's script by combining original poetry with oral histories from East Yard community members who have experienced toxic exposure.
Aire Libre features East Yard community members and CONTRA-TIEMPO dancers performing at various locations, including the iconic 6th Street Bridge in Boyle Heights, Bandini Park beneath the 710 freeway in Vernon, the residential streets of East LA, and the concrete banks of the LA River. The footage documents a range of environments—from transportation hubs including ports, freeways, and rail yards, to industrial zones comprising warehouse complexes, refineries, and oil derricks—as well as the residential areas and parks situated within these industrial and manufacturing landscapes. Exide Technologies, which has contaminated the soil with heavy metals such as arsenic and lead and is associated with higher rates of cancer in nearby communities, figures prominently in the piece.
Aire Libre will be exhibited at the Torrance Art Museum from March 29 through May 24, 2025. An opening reception will be held Saturday, March 29, from 6:00 to 9:00 PM, featuring a special live performance by CONTRA-TIEMPO Activist Dance Company and vocalist Carmina Escobar at 7:00 PM.
In addition to its presentation at the Torrance Art Museum, Aire Libre will be publicly projected onto various industrial sites within affected communities represented by East Yard. These guerrilla-style projections will aim to shine a light on the perpetrators of environmental harm while symbolically reclaiming and reoccupying these spaces of extraction through the vibrant presence of dancers’ bodies and the faces of community members.

Aire Libre es una instalación de video basada en la danza que examina la contaminación del aire y del suelo en el condado de Los Ángeles y su efecto desproporcionado en las comunidades de color de bajos ingresos que viven en medio de la industria pesada, la infraestructura y las instalaciones contaminantes que sustentan nuestra economía capitalista basada en combustibles fósiles.
Aire Libre es un proyecto colaborativo dirigido por la artista Erin Cooney, que reúne a East Yard Communities for Environmental Justice, CONTRA-TIEMPO Activist Dance Company, la poeta Rocío Carlos y las vocalistas Carmina Escobar y Joung-A Monica Yum.
Las presentaciones de danza de CONTRA-TIEMPO en Aire Libre materializan la interconexión de nuestros cuerpos con el aire que respiramos y el suelo que pisamos. Las interpretaciones vocales de Escobar y Yum transmiten las profundas emociones de las comunidades afectadas durante mucho tiempo por daños ambientales que las corporaciones y los funcionarios gubernamentales ignoran. La poeta Rocío Carlos ha elaborado el guión de la exhibición combinando poesía original con historias orales de miembros de la comunidad de East Yard que han experimentado exposición tóxica.
Aire Libre presenta a miembros de la comunidad de East Yard y bailarines que actúan en varios lugares, incluido el icónico puente de la calle 6 en Boyle Heights, Bandini Park debajo de la autopista 710 en Vernon, las calles residenciales del este de Los Ángeles y las orillas de concreto del río Los Ángeles. Aire Libre se exhibirá en el Torrance Art Museum del 29 de marzo al 24 de mayo de 2025. Se llevará a cabo una recepción de apertura el sábado 29 de marzo, de 6:00 a 9:00 p. m., con una actuación especial en vivo de la Compañía de Danza Activista CONTRA-TIEMPO y la vocalista Carmina Escobar a las 7:00 p. m.
Además de su presentación en el Museo de Arte de Torrance, Aire Libre se proyectará públicamente en varios sitios industriales dentro de las comunidades afectadas representadas por East Yard. Estas proyecciones de estilo guerrillero tendrán como objetivo arrojar luz sobre los perpetradores del daño ambiental mientras reclaman y reocupan simbólicamente estos espacios de extracción a través de la presencia vibrante de los cuerpos de los bailarines y los rostros de los miembros de la comunidad.
